CHRISTMAS MOVIE COUNTDOWN #19: The Harry Potter franchise

The Christmas movie countdown is our way of sharing the movies that get us in the festive mood, every day until xmas (kinda like an advent calender, minus the chocolate, sorry)

The Harry potter series has always made me feel a warm happy feeling inside and a longing to skip merrily down the hallways of Hogwarts. But why do these films seem so Christmassy to me? It has to be the warm welcome of Hogwarts, the promise of quidditch, endless feasts and defense against the dark arts lessons that excites me just like Christmas did when I was a child! Harry potter is the story of a young orphan wizard from Surrey, thrust into the complicated world of magic and forced to face his fate against Voldemort while trying to get good grades in potion class, no way linked to Christmas, but its just one of those films that is lovely to watch with your family or friends round this season.

As a teenager, I have nearly lost every once of Christmas cheer, but this definitely gets me in the spirit. Harry Potter always manages to crop up every Christmas: be it our family tradition (sadly no longer) to all go together to watch the new film in the series, around Christmas time, or harry’s face on a dvd appearing amongst the presents under the tree.

DO THEY PASS THE BECHDEL TEST??

Unfortunately, even though there are many empowering female characters in this series, like Hermione, Bellatrix and Mollie Weasley, some of the films barely pass due to lack of conversations between named females. And not to mention some of the racist elements…Lavender was black girl for the first five movies and she magically changed into a white girl when she became ron’s love interest…we’re not impressed.
