The Christmas movie countdown is our way of sharing the movies that get us in the festive mood, every day until xmas (kinda like an advent calender, minus the chocolate, sorry)
When I think of classic cinema, the 1939 technicolor epic The Wizard of Oz definitely springs to mind. With something to offer for absolutely anyone and some of the most iconic characters in the history of film The Wizard of Oz is a sure fire way to get in the christmas spirit.
Based on the book by L. Frank Baum, the story follows Dorothy, a girl from boring black and white Kansas who is suddenly sucked up into a tornado and ends up in the wonderful world of Oz. Here she encounters a multitude of creatures most notably The Scarecrow, The Tin Man and The Cowardly Lion who become her companions on her journey to find the wizard who can help her get home.
Dorothys journey isn’t easy however as the Wicked Witch of the West is out to get revenge on Dorothy, followed by her team of those flying monkeys, that put shivers down even the toughest folks’ spines.
DOES IT PASS THE BECHDEL TEST??
Yes! Our main character is a female, as are all the witches as is Auntie Em! This was a story about friendship and adventure, not romance so boys were never discussed in that manner.
