The Christmas movie countdown is our way of sharing the movies that get us in the festive mood, every day until xmas (kinda like an advent calender, minus the chocolate, sorry)
Every Christmas I’ll be flicking through the channels, looking for something that isn’t sickly sweet, or isn’t sweet enough and somehow I always end up on the Disney channel watching The Santa Claus. It stars Tim Allen in his first big screen film role, as a divorced Dad who’s ex-wife and psychiatrist partner have told his son that Santa Claus doesn’t exist. Then as his sullen son visits Tim on Christmas eve, they hear a big noise that makes them go outside. After spotting person on the roof, Tim calls out, startling the person makes them fall off the roof, and die!! Due to a legal technicality know as, get this ~the Santa clause~ Tim Allen must now become the latest incarnation of Father Christmas.
This puts me into the Christmas mood like nothing else because it’s just this normal guy that get thrown into this entirely new world of Christmas and has to deal with it through out the entire next year and shows people’s reactions to a guy rapidly ageing and growing into the image of Santa, even during the summer.
DOES IT PASS THE BECHDEL TEST??
Sadly, this film does not pass the Bechdel test. While we do have multiple named women characters, they never speak to each other. A main character is a girl elf in the North Pole named Judy, who plays a key role in getting Tim Allen to embrace the spirit of Christmas. she does talk about things other than men such as Christmas, but she doesn’t talk to any other women, at least that I can remember.
